My name is Garth Leno and I’m serving as a church planting pastor in a church we started in Windsor, Ontario. The Gathering was born from the heart of God during the summer of 2013. Several people who felt uneasy about their church experience gathered for Bible study and fellowship with my wife, Patty, and me in the family room of our home in south Windsor. It was not long before our group grew too large for our home and we began meeting Saturday evenings at the Roseland Golf and Curling Club for simple worship, corporate prayer, and teaching straight from the Bible.
The Bible study outgrew the first meeting room we rented. We acquired a larger meeting space across the hall that accommodated 100. More people kept coming, and soon we heard God whisper that He wanted us to plant a new church. On January 18, 2014 we announced to the Bible study group that we planned to take the next step in forming a new church in Windsor-Essex, and everyone cheered!
We researched several groups and denominations and decided to associate with the Canadian National Baptist Convention because it is a good fit. We want to be part of a church-planting movement that is multiplying disciples and churches for the glory of God! Our proximity to the U.S. has created a unique opportunity for us to be seated with the CNBC and the SBC in Michigan.
The first Sunday morning service for The Gathering was held on May 4, 2014 with 154 people attending. Since then we have rented a room at a golf course clubhouse, leased and renovated a warehouse, and then purchased a 12,000 square foot building on six acres of land right in the heart of Windsor, Ontario! We are remodeling the space as we have money to do so. God is faithful!
We now hold two morning services at 9:15 and 11:00 a.m., along with Kids Gatherings for children (0–5th grade) at each service. We’re enjoying student ministry for teens in Jr and Sr High, a young adults ministry, and many thriving small groups.
Pray with us as we seek to advance the Kingdom
Pray for us as we decide where to plant our next church
Please pray for supporting churches to see the opportunity to “come over” and help us!
