Boldness to Speak

By Gilbert Nigh

Sometimes we face opposition to what we should do and say. We might not even really face any opposition but we fear the possibility and that fear holds us back. On Maundy Thursday (the day before Good Friday) I was in getting a coffee at my usual place. There was the normal small talk but then the barista asked if I had any plans for the weekend. I wasn’t expecting that sort of question and so with some confusion and fear I mumbled an answer. Clearly the answer should have been, “Yes, I have all sorts of plans to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus!” As I got in my car and drove away I couldn’t believe I let that opportunity pass me by! I let the fear step in and take over.

There are Christians around the world today that are being persecuted. You don’t have to search too hard to find their stories. Some suggest, “More Christians died for the faith in the twentieth century than in the previous nineteen centuries of Christian history combined.” It is hard to get accurate data on this sort of question and the world’s population has grown exponentially in the 20th century. The fact remains; many, many Christians are persecuted to the point of death, even today.

Therefore, no matter where we are, whether we face real persecution or simply have fear of opposition or disagreement, we need to pray the prayer Peter and John prayed, asking God for the boldness and enabling to speak His word. That can be boldness to say a word to the barista, our neighbor over the back fence, or the colleague in the cubicle adjacent to ours. It takes God’s enabling to speak, whether it is in the locker room at the gym, with family at a picnic, or with friends watching TV. Pray God would open the doors for us to speak and give us the boldness so we can walk through them.

Acts 4:29

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto your servants, that with all boldness they may speak your word.

Lord, give us the boldness to speak about you to those around us. Even in the face of persecution or opposition give us the boldness to accept the opportunities you bring. Remove our fear and teach us to trust you as we speak your word.
